Mani and Sunna

Sunna - goddess of the Sun - is the sister of Mani, god of the Moon.

Sunna – goddess of the Sun – is the sister of Mani, god of the Moon.

The sun, the sister of the moon, from the south

Her right hand cast over heaven’s rim;

No knowledge she had where her home should be,

The moon knew not what might was his,

The stars knew not where their stations were.

– From the Völuspá

Máni and his sister Sunna are the children of Mundilfari. They were so fair that Mundilfari named them “moon” and “sun”. Angered by his arrogance the gods placed the brother and sister in the heavens.

The Sun and Moon are pulled through the heavens by the sister and brother while pursued by wolves from behind.
